Cabot Circus Wins Prestigious Award.

Cabot Circus Crowned International Shopping Centre of the Year

Cabot Circus, Bristol has beaten an international shortlist to win Best Shopping Centre of the Year 2008 at the prestigious MAPIC EG Retail Awards, which recognise excellence in retail property.

An international panel of expert judges selected Bristol’s new £500m retail and leisure destination from a shortlist of three leading shopping centres, including Forum Mersin in Turkey and Zlote Tarasy in Poland.

Judges praised the seamless integration of Cabot Circus into the city centre and the positive impact that the 1.5 million square foot development has had on the rest of Bristol since it opened in September, commenting that “it has changed the entire city and for one shopping centre to do that is quite an achievement”. The architecture was also commended with judges paying tribute to the high specification and successful mixture of modern elements.

The Bristol Alliance were congratulated for the personalised service that they provided to incoming tenants, with one retailer describing the team as “dedicated to making sure that they fulfilled what we wanted.”

Bristol Alliance project director, Bob De Barr, said: “To win an international award of this calibre is a huge achievement and this is a very proud moment for the whole team. Cabot Circus has brought the range and quality of retail which this city has long deserved and Bristol can now take its rightful place as the regional shopping capital for the South West.”

Cllr Helen Holland, Leader of Bristol City Council, added: "Cabot Circus is a stunning piece of design and landmark architecture connecting seamlessly with existing shopping areas. Cabot Circus has also created a wonderful city centre retail and leisure location of regional significance, which has quickly established itself as a fantastic draw and destination. Bristol has the most powerful city economy in the UK outside London - and the success of Cabot Circus, especially in difficult global financial circumstances, is testament to the city's economic strength."

The awards ceremony took place on Thursday 20 November at the Hotel Martinez in Cannes.
